Moving Checklist

Planning, planning, and more planning is the key to a successful move! Start by setting three important dates: packing, loading, and delivery. A solid checklist will help everything run more smoothly. Use this guide to help plan your move:

4–6 Weeks Before You Move

  • Take inventory of your belongings. Decide what to keep, donate, or discard.

  • Schedule a garage sale for items you’re not taking. Donate the rest and keep receipts for tax purposes.

  • Get estimates from moving companies.

  • Make travel arrangements (hotel, flights, etc.).

  • Arrange packing. If doing it yourself, label boxes by room.

  • Gather personal records (medical, school, veterinary, legal, etc.).

  • Send school transcripts to the new school in advance.

  • Track moving expenses for potential tax deductions.

  • Close store or credit accounts you won’t be using.

  • Coordinate with employers for updated tax forms (W-4).
