Gulf Coast State College proudly celebrates the extraordinary achievements of Dr. Cheryl Flax-Hyman, who was designated as the institution’s first female President by the District Board of Trustees. She was also presented with the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the board.
The Distinguished Service Award holds a unique distinction, having been awarded only seven times in the history of the College. This honor emphasizes Dr. Flax-Hyman’s exceptional contributions and highlights her achievements while at Gulf Coast State College. She has had a profound impact across GCSC over her 39 years of dedicated service, including her most recent time spent as President.
“With 39 years of dedicated service to GCSC, Dr. Flax-Hyman’s impact has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Mr. Bill Cramer, Chair of the Gulf Coast State College District Board of Trustees. “It is our honor to award her the Distinguished Service Award for those decades of service and commitment to Gulf Coast. We are also proud to name Dr. Flax Hyman President of Gulf Coast State College and make history with her as the first female president of this great institution.”
Dr. Flax-Hyman served the role of Interim President following the retirement of President Dr. John Holdnak from June 2022 to July 2023. The District Board of Trustees elevated her to the presidency in July 2023 in recognition of her exceptional leadership. She was an instrumental force in keeping GCSC united, along with a continued increase in enrollment and instrumental in ensuring Gulf Coast remained the community’s College. Dr. Flax-Hyman will now serve as the Executive Vice President of Gulf Coast State College.
