2019 Invention Convention and STEM Open House
April 13, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am
Our nation continues to fail to produce enough STEM professionals to move us forward in STEM fields. We currently utilize many STEM professionals from other countries who are integral to our national security and on whom we rely to maintain our technological superiority. We need to grow our own! What better place to start than right here, where STEM is all around us, and amazing career opportunities are right in our back yard! That is why Gulf Coast State College, FSU Panama City, NSCWPCD, Bay District Schools and Tech Farms are teaming up to hold an open house to show how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are used to create businesses and products.
Display at the Open House!
FSU Panama City and Gulf Coast will have Collegiate Drive closed for you, the local businesses that use STEM skills on a regular basis, to show off all the science, technology, engineering and mathematics that have allowed you to create your business. This could range from a bucket truck from Gulf Power to a mine countermeasure device from the Navy Base to SCUBA gear from a local dive shop to a 3D printer from the library or an RV from Camping World. The sky is the limit!!
There is plenty of room, so please consider spending Saturday afternoon with us in the area between the ATC at Gulf Coast and North Bay at FSUPC. We want families to wander through and to engage with you as you demonstrate the STEM aspect of your wares.
Displays: The idea is to allow children and families to see your product(s). You are not selling the product, you are providing activities that allow others to see how science, technology, engineering and mathematics go into its development. Your job is to “hook” folks to visit you by providing fun activities. For example, if your product or device relies on sound, a bit of sand on a drum head quickly gives the idea of how sound is transmitted.
What you choose to do is up to you. Just understand that there is plenty of territory between the two schools to roam, so just “being there” is generally not enough to entice folks to seek you out. STEM is by definition applying knowledge (translation: DOING stuff). You will want to have stuff for your visitors to do.
Cost: Nothing. If you choose to invest in your display, that is up to you. This event has no costs for you to bear, just some of your time for a pleasant afternoon.
