7th Annual Lion Tamer Dive Tournament & Family Fun Day

Lionfish Traps to be Tested by Covenant Christian School Students

Covenant Christian School students, under the direction of teacher, David Camperman, have been working this year on a Lionfish trap. Why? Because this voracious-eating, prolific-reproducer and non-native species with its venomous fins needs to be taken off our fishing and diving reefs.

In order to accomplish this task, Mr. Camperman’s class, with the blessing of Florida Fish & Wildlife and guidance from NOAA scientist Dr. Steve Gittings, has designed a trap to collect these notorious creatures from the Gulf. If successful, the traps will provide a much more convenient and quicker way than diving to remove them.

Friday, April 27, their traps, students, and crew will be loaded on Panama City Dive Center’s vessel, Island Diver, departing Capt. Anderson’s Marina at 8 a.m. On Friday’s trip, the crew will travel to a predetermined area that is approximately 80 feet deep to deploy the traps. The divers will follow the traps as the students lower them into an area known to have a significant number of lionfish.

Friday, May 4th, the students and crew will return to the area where the traps have been placed to retrieve them.

In their going and coming with the traps, the students will be documenting the event and the findings to report back to the FWC and NOAA. This builds on over a year of work and support from other groups such as Diver’s Den.

What an awesome way these students are learning about the ecosystems around them and how to facilitate changes for good! We appreciate being a part of this exciting event and another opportunity besides our Liontamer Lionfish Dive Tournament scheduled May 19-20.

In addition to learning ways to extract this predator from the waters, we are all attempting to educate the public on the issues we have with Lionfish, and how to assist in decreasing their impacts on the reefs- AND show what a tasty fish they are!

We welcome any press or dignitaries interested in participating in this event to contact Chelsea Ray, Marketing Director for Capt. Anderson’s Marina,  at 850-234-5940 or by email at captandersonsmktg@aol.com .

Thank you in advance for your continuing support of the fishing and diving industries!

Sincerely,

Pam
